John Mateer, a 6’1″, 224-lb Junior QB from Little Elm, Texas, transferred to Oklahoma after a breakout 2024 season at Washington State. In his first year as a starter, he posted:

  • 3,139 passing yards, 29 TDs, 7 INTs
  • 826 rushing yards, 15 rushing TDs
  • 44 total touchdowns, leading the nation

Mateer thrived in OC Ben Arbuckle’s up-tempo offense, showcasing his strong arm and dynamic running ability. He excelled in explosive plays and ranked among top QBs in rushing first downs. Go watch his game against San Jose state. I mean, holy shit, 390 passing, 4 TDs passing, 111 rushing, 1 TD. The guy was straight up beasting.

Why it will work in Norman

-The Sooners return their entire starting Oline, entire running back room, and their top receiver from last year. Weapons he was not used to having at Wazzu

-Mateer is already familiar with the OC and the offensive scheme

-Despite last years struggles, Brett Ventables and the Sooner program consistently churn out the best QBs in the country

2025 Season Outlook

  • Offensive Fit: Arbuckle’s spread system fits Mateer’s skillset perfectly. Expect faster tempo, designed runs, and deep shots.
  • SEC Challenge: He’ll face tougher defenses, but his dual-threat talent gives Oklahoma a big upside.
  • Heisman Potential: While not chasing it, strong early performances could put him in the mix.

Gambling Outlook

-My GOAT is currently +3500 to win the Heisman award (worth a sprinkle)

-The Sooners win total is currently at +5.5. The SEC schedule is a gauntlet, but if they win their 4 non-cons (3 cupcakes and Michigan @ Norman) they just need 2 wins against Auburn(H), Texas(A), South Carolina (A), Ole Miss(H), Tennessee and Bama both away(Yikes-BOL), then finishing up with Mizzou and LSU at home.

-Mateer will make plays and find the endzone at Oklahoma, but the big question mark is if he will remain as big of a duel threat QB against SEC speed and size

Final Word

John Mateer brings firepower and leadership to Oklahoma’s offense. If he builds chemistry and adapts quickly to SEC speed, he could elevate the Sooners from a struggling attack to a contender—and maybe even land in the Heisman conversation. If nothing else, I promise you he’s one of the best watches in CFB
